Douglas Adams is a definite favorite of mine, particularly the Hitchhiker's Trilogy, which I believe has five books. He writes brilliant, otherworldly, highly imaginative, and plain weird satire. While I disagree with him philosophically, his books are still incredibly funny, and an incredibly good read. The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, at least, is a must read.

Again, Adams is a British author, so it pays to imagine the characters in the books talking with British accents. The Hitchhiker's Trilogy includes:

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
The Restaurant at the End of the Universe
Life, The Universe, and Everything
So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish!
Mostly Harmless

Adams also wrote some good books about Dirk Gently and his holistic detective Agency.
